Default '98 stratus problems

Okay so my girlfriend has a 1998 Stratus with the 4speed automatic tranny. The check engine light is on and it's coming up with the P0700 and P0725 fault codes (which is a pretty general code so it doesn't really help me out too much).

So here's what it does. When you start up the car when it's cold, all is fine. Once it get's pretty warm, it starts shifting really hard. Then after about a 1/2 mile of that the check engine light will come on, then it starts cutting out real bad (kind of like it's getting no fuel, but it is) and won't go about around 1500 RPM's or so. It also goes into it's safe mode and won't go out of 2nd. The speedometer and everything works fine, and it will idle fine. Let the car cool off for about 15 mins and all is fine again, for a short time.

Now I've heard a lot of people with these codes putting in speed input and output sensors and all kinds of stuff...which never seems to fix the problem. Since it only does it once it's warm, it makes me think it's a sensor for sure.

Anyone had this problem and was able to fix it?

Thanks in advance!!

ummm...

the p 700 code is a tranny fault (haynes is sooo helpful sometimes), any idea what the p 725 is?

sometimes you can unplug the computer and it will act ok for a while.

Ya I hate haynes. I get factory manuals for all my rigs but this one is getting sold as soon as I fix it.

And unplugging the computer...yes it'll get the CEL to turn off for a bit, but how does that solve the problem? It really doesn't

By the way I forgot to ad P0700=transmission control system malfunction.
and P0725=Engine speed input circuit malfunction.

Those are really basic codes though and could be MANY different things that would cause them

sounds like a speed sensor from the engine. the axt needs that input to give better emissions/gas miles. it also gives the signals for gear change and how long to keep/hold a gear.

i can't find anything in my book. most spped sensors are located on top of the tranny to get engine rpm's. if you have a scanner you could unplug one at a time, wipe the comp, and see if any new codes pop up. i know, pretty crappy. sorry i couldn't help more.

Ya that's kinda what I was thinking from the P0725 code. Do you happen to know how to test the speed sensor? Like what voltage is supposed to be coming from each of the wires?

not sure. you could try an advn search. neons and PTs have the same powertrain. neon owners have a real good section here. hope it helps.

Does anyone know where exactly the ground straps (if any) on the TCM are supposed to be? Or for that matter any other relevant ground straps that may be missing or hidden?
