Strange rattle coming from under the hood

I have a 1997 Breeze w/ a 2.0L SOHC engine and a 4 speed auto trans. Recently it has developed a tinny rattle when stopped at red light or when under a load or doing anything else that shakes the engine. I have checked all of the various heat shields, exhaust and covers and all seem to be secure. I have also checked my motor mounts and anything else that can vibrate and rattle. The car runs great and makes no noises it shouldn't other than the rattle. ANy suggestions of what to check before I take it to a mechenic?
