Default Speed Sensor 2004 2.5v6

Hi there,
My girlfriend just gave me her old car when she got a new one.
I want to see if I can get it working so I can use it. It doesn't shift out of second gear and the speedometer is out. It frequently stalls when stopped.
Is this all fixed by a speed sensor replacement? If so can I do it myself... any diagrams to where it's located and how to replace it?

The car used to have trouble shifting before this and the rpms would fly around without giving it more gas... is this an indication that the transmission is going to have to be replaced?

Help is much appreciated! Thanks,

-Rob

It sounds like a "sensor" issue to me.

It would be good if we could find out more about your car. IE: is it a coupe (mitsubishi eclipse) or sedan (dodge stratus), and what trim level it is. Yup, they are NOT the same car :-P and how many miles, recent services, etc.

The more we know, the more we can help you.

Locking into 2nd gear is perfectly normal when the computer senses a transmission fault. It's referred to as "limp home mode". I take it that you can drive it? If you can, I would avoid driving it until it's resolved, or at least know what the problem is.

Hey thanks for the reply, sorry I thought I was in the thing about Stratus'.
It's a 94 Stratus sedan. 53k miles but the odometer is out (lol). As far as the recent services... I'm finding out. Thanks.

Hey, you're in the right place. the subject said 2004 which is 2g (and is different from coupe to sedan). Are you sure it's not a '95 instead??? The stratus/breeze/cirrus didn't come out until '95. '95-'00 were only available in sedan, with a 2.0l, 2.4l, and 2.5v6. I guess bottom line is, it looks like the car in my signature right?

I will have to find out the placement of the sensors for you, I've been lucky enough to not have to change them out myself.

Default '95

Yup it's a 95. Just asked my Girlfriend... So, yeah I don't know but I would like to do the speed sensor myself and see if it can fix it. Should I be expecting to replace the transmission you think?

Thanks a lot!

It's not an incredibly difficult job to do. From your symptoms, I would expect your trans to be just fine.
