Default Fuel gauge and light

Hi guys, new to the forum. My girlfriend has a Stratus, I think it's an '01 maybe, that I'm borrowing for a little while. I want to do some basic stuff for her. You know, run some Seafoam through it and maybe replace the plugs and wires. My question is this, when I'm driving along the gas light will come on and the needle will dip pretty severely. Is this some kind of wiring problem or is it the fuel sending unit I've been reading about? Please let me know what this is, how hard it is to fix it and what is required. Thanks in advance!

No one has any input on this? I guess maybe it's not a common problem, I thought there might be an easy fix.

Okay, it's a '99. It's not under warraty as far as I know. It's happened before, and she had to pay for it, so I'm guessing not. I guess we'll have to take it to a dealer. Thanks for the help.

if it happened before, take it back to where it was "fixed" the first time! thats crap...ive never had a problem like that on any car that i own, and shes had it twice on the same car?! either they didnt fix it right, or they fixed the wrong thing and something else is causing the issue!

Default RE: Fuel gauge and light

Hi Guys

I have the same problem, started happening today, freaked myself out somewhat, thought I might be loosing fuel. The low fuel light comes on randomly and the needle begins to drop, sometimes a little, then the light goes off and it returns to normal. This started happening right after I filled up the tank though iv done that many times. Thought maybe turning the car off might help, didnt, then when it was turned off for a while and turned back on the light was on constantly and the gauge read empty, then the light went off and the gauge went to the half way mark, though I know the tank is full.

Really pissin me off, anyway, any feedback would be appreciated, thanks and take care

Peace
Jack

I've been having the same problem, it finally got worse. I'm experiencing some type of issue with the flow of the fuel...while idle, the car appears to want to cut off, however if I press the gas, the engine smoothes out. I will be having it checked this week and I'll let you know what the problem is. My guess would be either a pump or filter issue, but i'm not sure.[8D]

I am having the same problem with the fuel gauge as well. It happened once a long time ago and just came back....however now i also experience a heavy engine bog andloss of power.( almost at the same time)The car slowed to 40mph and then kicked right back in??? luckily I was only a mile from home. I'm not sure if these 2 are related or not? Either way I need some help. The car also needs a headgasket replaced, but It hasnt leaked for a long time...and its not currently.I check the fluid levels every time I drive it and only drive it a few miles to work and back. At first I was thinking that it was probably the fuel filter, but now I'm not thinking so. I went out tonight to mess with it a little and it had a miss in it....the motor would bog a little and then take right off, I gave it a little gas and it made a nice loud screatching noise. When I first started it, itsounded like the A/C was on and there was a problem with it ( however the switch was off )....such as being stuck or perhaps a bearing was out....( It sounded like it was in that area) I could see this being a reason for the loss of power and also explain the noise??? But i'm not sure....to be honest....I have no idea!? Did anyone ever figure out what the issue was with the fuel gauge? After reading this...its possible that they are related....since they both came about at the same time ( this happened RIGHT after gas light came on and gauge went down....with in a mile) I have checked and I do have fuel and see no apparent leaks....Like i said...this did happen once before, about 2 months ago....I had a half a tank and the needle dropped and light came on...I made it home. I looked for any obvious leaks and didnt see any, the next morning i started it up and the gauge was back up to where it should be...I see now that this is a somewhat common problem. I do not currently have the CEL up, but it has been onin the past. So I will check it out tom. and see what codes it gives me. But if anyone might have a clue whats going on....PLEASE let me know.

Thanks
