Attempt to change the 2.4 SOHC 4G64 timing belts
I'm planning to change the timing belts on my Mitsubishi 4G64 SOHC 2.4 Engine in my 2004 Dodge Stratus Coupe. Mileage is 73K, slightly overdue for the belts to be changed. It's possible I might fill this thread with lots of silly questions, but I will try to post lots of useful pictures, and share any advice I come up with.
I've been reading the workshop manuals, and they mention special tools:
MD998767: Tensioner Pulley Wrench
MD998781 to hold the flywheel or drive plate
MD998778 for crankshaft sprocket removal
MD998785 to prevent the counterbalance shaft sprocket from turning
MB990767 and MD998719 tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
I can probably find another tool to pull the sprocket, right? Can't I leave the crank and balance shafts free, and line up the timing marks when I install the new belts? Are any of these tools absolutely necessary, or do they just make the job easier?
