Default 98 Strat running poor

I have a 2.5L, auto trans, ES 98 with 86K. It runs real good when its cold. Once it gets hot, its runs poorly, feels like its missing a beat. Sometimes it will idle really low, about 500 to 600 rpm, at stop lights while in gear, and the oil light comes on. I have never had the check engine light come on through this. This started happening after a 900 mile trip I took last month. I didn't run it real hard though, 70 to 75 mph mostly. No water in the oil, no bad exhaust, so I don't think its a head gasket. I've run several tanks of gas through it with some injector cleaner with no luck. The only thing I can think of is an oxy. sensor or maybe just a tuneup. I really don't want just start throwing parts at it unless I have to. Can anyone help ?????

Well, the oil flicker or a solid oil light at idle after a long drive is NOT UNCOMMON at all with these cars. Despite tons of people having trouble with this, there hasnt been a fix posted for it. From my experience it appears that when the oil heats up, especially on high mileage engines (considered about 75k +) the oil either sludges up and settles causing the oil pickup tube to get a big clogged, or whatever is causing the car to idle so low (sometimes as low as 500 RPMs) is creating the lack of oil pressure that lasts only as long as the car is idling. I personally have this problem but for me it has had no adverse effects in terms of vibrations, overheating, CELs etc. My car just runs normally with this flicker, so Im ignoring it till someone finds out a definately reason for it.

The temperature difference in performance could be caused by not enough air coming through the intake, leading to not enough oxygen and some shuddering or stalling. If you havent done a tuneup recently that would probably be a good thing to do anyway.

First thing is to get the idle problem fixed. If the idle is too low it will cause an oil pressure drop. Have you had the computer scanned for error codes? Check your EGR valve to make sure it's not sticking open at idle. Good tune-up? Idle air control valve may also have a problem.

As for the oil pressure problem as a whole, the pressure needs to be tested with the engine in the failing condition and in this case HOT. Pull the sender unit out of the engine and connect a mechanical test gauge and test for oil pressure at the proper RPM's per your Factory Service Manual. This will indicate if the problem is engine related or gauge/sender related.
