The mechanic took it apart and looked at it all free of charge. I have a 2004 dodge stratus. It overheats after about 45 min of in town driving. I drive it about 3/4 mile to my niece's school and shut it off for an hour then drive it back and by the time I get home it is creeping above the half mark so I know if I go any further it will overheat.

The fans are kicking in but it's weird because one blows hot air and the other blows cold

????? are you talking about the fans for the radiator ?? ,or inside car
that sounds odd for a mechanic to pull the head to check gasket and not charge
for it lot of labor involved

He's a really good friend of ours. But regardless we still can't locate the problem and I'm at the end of my rope. I was talking about the fans for the radiator. I'm a woman but I'm not completely stupid lol.

Just an outside the box thought (not that I'm familiar with this model). Have your mechanic check the water pump intake hose for collapsing and starving the water pump.
