Default Sensor help

My husband has a 2001 dodge stratus rt.One day the speedometer stopped working. We had it looked at an the mechanic said we need to replace the "regular speed sensor"We had it replaced and for about five mins the speedometer worked then stopped again. Also on the old vehicle speed sensor my husband noticed the rod like part that contains the "sprocket" which has tiny teeth like pieces has one of the "teeth" broke off.Would this cause speedometer problems? Sorry I described to the best of my ability. Thanks

Newer vehicles, the speedometer is pcm driven off a sensor. The days of a cable and gear driven speedos eneded probably in the 90's or earlier. Is the check engine light on?

Yes the check engine light came on right after the speedometer stopped working.
