Typically, low brake fluid in the reservoir

it could also be a combination of slightly low fluid, combined with worn brake pads...

does it flicker, like when you stop fast or turn suddenly?

you might wanna check your brake light switch. Volkswagens have a recall on them not that this is your problem but its a suggestion. question I have for you is your brake lights on the rear of the car staying on if they are it is likely to be the switch.

Testing and Inspection
Notes

Connect an ohmmeter between the stoplight Switch connector terminals

There should be no continuity between the terminals when the plunger is pushed in as shown. There should be continuity when it is released.

It may be as simple as the fluid being low but if the light continue to stay on after adding fluid it may be a faulty fluid warning switch. How many miles are on the car and are you having any problems braking?

I have a 97 Stratus that brake lights are not working on. I was just going to go purchase a new brake light swictch. I was looking for installation instructions, when I found this. I guess I need to check if I have a signal before purchasing the swicth. Do I take an ohm meeter and put the prongs into the socket to do that?
