Default 98 Srat 2.4l problems...help?

Well let me start off by saying this. I bought the car about a half year ago, currently it has a little over 127K on it. Some thing has been popping up recently that has me concerned. First off, for the past 2 months the idle has been rough in my car when at idle. I have taken it to several places and to no avail I keep being told not to worry about it (yeah right...my car...I want it running proper). Now just a few days ago I replaced the Alt. which was bad...very bad. and about a month ago I replaced the plugs and wires (Bosch wires, copper core plugs). Something however is not sitting right with me. When I start it on a cold day I can hear a growling type of noise coming from the no. 1 Cyl area. it SOUNDS internal, but I could be wrong. Now I have NO codes, so I ruled that out. Fuel filter is gonna be replaced shortly, but it wouldn't cause a growl in the engine. The last oil change (around 2.5K ago) showed no signs of metal (which is GOOD). But this has got me going crazy cuz the idle is still jumpy and I can hear growling from under the hood when at a stop. When the car is warm however, the noise goes away....but the idle still jumps. Not as much though. Can anyone take a stab at this before I go insane? one thing to note, the car never burned oil til around 6,000 ago...but that is attributed to the rear main seal...which is gonna get fixed. Are main bearing a thing to be concerned on in this car? Or the internal balancer?
