Default need advice please: wet air temp sensor

Hello, I have a 95 dodgle stratus 2.0 and I replaced the air temperature sensor (along with other sensors) yesterday. The original air temp sensor was wet and not working. The new one made the car run great. However, within 20 miles of driving the new air temp sensor was wet again and not working and I was back to the bucking, dragging, backfiring. My timing belt was replaced along with the block in April. Initially the car ran good, but not as good as when I took it in to the mechanic. Through a series of process of elimination (spark plugs, fuel pump/filter, etc.,) we finally found the sensor problem. But what is causing it to become wet again so quickly and quit working? Where is the wet coming from, what is it, and how do I fix it? I have not replaced my catalytic converter yet, or had it checked. I greatly appreciate any help. I'm at the end of my rope and my bank account! I love this car and would rather fix it than replace it.
