97 Breeze 2.4 Auto Trans quirks

My 97 Breeze 2.4/auto at times feels like it isn't in gear. This only happens when cold after coming to a stop say at a stop light or sign. Typical sinerio: Slow down and stop at a stop light, trans in drive....light changes, I give it a little gas and the engine revs slightly then I feel a bump like it drops into gear then everything is fine for a while. It does it every so often, no check engine light and what seems to help is shifting through all the gears a few times at a stand still before taking off. Seems like if I do that the trans doesn't slip on takeoff. Fluid is ok and right up where is should be. Any ideas? DC
