Default jeep liberty...

I'm considering buying a new jeep liberty and looking for all the negative on this SUV.

I do like the styling and over all size, I do not like the 3.7 v6 or that you can't get one with a mnaul transmisson, I doubt I will ever need to go off road and The liberty's city and highway EPA ratting is not that inspiring.

If any one has real time ownership expierance and paying to run this mini gas hog, please let me know.

I have to purchass a 2nd mode of transport and so far a jeep liberty seems the most pratical.

It is actually a decent machine, you can get a manual trans up til 2007, after that then no. If you get an older one, especially 05-07, they came with diesels. I got my wife one and she loves it, it's easy to modify. I just wish it had more power (the 3.7 is a 4.7 minus 2 cylinders) and was a little longer in the back and a tad bit wider overall.

My ex wife had an '02 Liberty 4x4, a limited with the 3.7 v6. It was a great little suv, but yeah, the gas mileage was no better then the '98 Grand Cherokee it replaced. We only had it about 10 months as it was just a little too small for our needs and traded it in on a new '02 Grand Cherokee 4x4.

The short little wheelbase did great off-road (the few times I snuck it out) and like I said, the only complaint we had was it was just a bit small for us.

IMO the new ones (08+) suck!!! They are simply Dodge Nitros with Jeep badging!!!

my aunt has had two jeep libertys the 4wd is much better than the ford escape she had before. They are all very top heavy though Dodge/Jeep added a lot of weight to bottom to keep them from rolling over hence the bad mileage, i liked driving the older one (im 6'4" more leg room) the new (08) had this wierd hump coming out of the center console to the driver side, a little too small for me but she fits. IMO go with the older one especially if you can find diesel theyre harder to come by since the difference in gas and diesel went down though. deisel has better mileage and i believe more power but i could be wrong, the 3.7 V6 is the same as my moms caravan but the van, even though its bigger gets better mpg probably because its FWD and not 4WD. But the 6 just isnt a V8 like my ram. anyway liberty is a good SUV but get an earlier one.

I have an 03' with 150,000 miles on it now it had 22,000 when I bought it. It has the 3.7 w/ the 5-speed and np231 t-case personally I feel this is one of the best vehicles I have owned. The only repairs I have had is a evap line got a hole in it back by the gas tank which kept throwing a light for evaporative emissions leak and the clutch interlock switch went out so I have had less than $100 worth of repairs in five years. My only complaint is that they do have a lot of road noise but I have made several 1000 mile plus trips and never had an issue. If you do get one make sure it does not have a recall on the balljoints if it does just take it to a dealership and they will replace free of charge.
