The plane will take off....and it will be funny to watch all of you go....[sm=jawdrop.gif]

It's simple, the plane only rolls forward because the engines push it forward.....and once the engine achieves a certain amount of thrust, it should be able to take off from a sitting still position.

While the VTOL style jet (Harrier jet) doesnt get used in this equation, its the same process. It doesnt require a runway, just has to build up enough thrust to lift it off the ground.

Good old captain isnt here to help dusty and I take bets though

The plane will take off though, anyone who says it will not is f'n stupid. Does anyone know if this is a result of us nagging them or is it just a coincidence?

They will be using a remote controlled airplane.

They have the money!!! They should build a conveyor big enough for a small 2 or 4 seater at least. You know they will use a R/C plane first as they always do a scaled test first before they move onto the full scale.

A plane needs airflow over the wings to generate the lift needed to achieve takeoff.

And the plane will have that airflow. Free spinning wheels + thrust (power for movement) provided by the propellor = conveyor doesn't really make a difference.

For all the non believers, do this since you are right in front of a computer and these things should not be hard to find. Take a piece of paper, set it on the desk, then get a round pen or pencil that can roll, set it on the left side of the paper. Begin to pull the paper to your left slowly, then push the pencil any speed you want. That is the exact same principle as a real plane.

Seaplanes get off the ground quite well without wheels......the prop is an airscrew that propels the plane forward (and generates lift)......wheels, skids, floats, etc. are just along for the ride......

Okay, I misunderstood the topic. I was under the impression they were going to take an un-powered aircraft, place it on some sort of conveyor, and hope it'd take off. Because that will NOT work.

However, convential planes don't take off because of their engines' thrust, they take off because of airflow. It's just the speed necessary to obtain that effect is reached via the engine's thrust... ..

Anyways, unless I'm still misunderstanding this concept, this plan is pointless. The conveyor will not travel at nowhere near the speed to prevent the plane from taking off. The planes engine thrust will easily overcome the power of a conveyor traveling in the opposite direction the plane is pointed. In other words, the conveyor is useless. It will just require more thrust by the engines to reach the velocity necessary for lift-off. Idea sounds kinda stupid to me....
