Default I need job ideas!!

I'm done high school class of 09. I aplyed for a union job for heavy equiment but no luck. I knew they was no chance in getting in after a phone call with my uncle. He has in the last 3yrs they have not taken anyone thats what the guys in the union said to him. They also said if the offer me anything to take it. They offer me a better luck next yr. I do plan on going back its what I want to do. But until than I need some sort of full time work with 40hrs + would be great I'm down for ot all the time. I take it when every I can get it at work. Any ideas would be great!! I don't want to go back to school like "a collage" per say. It would be nice to get into something to me look the a better canadate to the union when they start taking ppl agin. I'm not sure which road to do or what to do at all! Ideas?

Can I ask your reason for not wanting to go to collage? I don't want to knock you or anything, but in my experience and seeing others, school is going to be your best bet.

Don't take this the wrong way, and I am saying this with a nice helpful tone, but I just read a few of your posts and I think that you really should look into college or even a trade school. You don't want to get into a union laboring job, or a job that can get you hooked for life and end up being on the short end of the stick 15 years down the road.

You're young, got your whole life ahead of you and need to really think about your long term future.

Working FT through the summer is one thing, but if given the chance, you really should look into more education.

Why I don't want to go back to school. It's not for me ask laramie1997 I can speak it but not type it. Plus I got up a 3:45pm and its not 10:09am so I'm almost out of gas. I would rather work than go back to school. I like to work school was never fun for me I slept most of senior year. Its just not my thing. I'm a worker not a book person. This job is not a labors job its go out and run back hoes track hoes skid steers all the stuff you see on the side of the road. School just sucked for me its not my thing.

http://www.pct.edu/catalog/majors/HY.shtml they offer degrees in what you are looking for... just to show you there are more than just the boring book jobs out there This is a two year degree, then you can atleast say you have a degree, which will make you very marketable to any heavy construction company or union

Iagree with Land R, it is hard to get good jobs without a degree anymore. but if you are dead set not to go back to school, heavy equipment is a pretty good field, look into repair to get your foot in the door, then move up. Rail Roads, Truckers, and drillers are needed here in Louisiana.

im going to agree with the guys who say you should go back to school and get some kind of degree, it will make you much more valuable to the company once you are out in the workforce, and in most cases will also raise your salary

this is kind of speaking from my experience, my dad didn't go to college and finish college until his 40s. Because of that he has never been able to have a "great" job. Our whole lives we have just lived paycheck to paycheck basically. We always knew we would eat but we would only have just enough to get by. So go to college when you're young not when your "middle" aged. You may not like school at all, but it will more than likely be beneficial for your future. It will give you more options down the road and what not.

I'm doing mechanical engineering right now at a community college here in Ohio, I'm in my 2nd year and so far its been VERY little book work, cept for the general ed classes. At my school they do the engineering program as a hands on thing and less theory thus cutting the book time by a TON and increasing the hands on time. So not all school is "book" time.

Well what I would recommend is first finding out what you like to do, you say that the heavy machinery is where you want to go but have you ever done anything with it or interned or anything like that to find out if it is right for you? My brother in law was like that, he wanted to do this and that and has switched jobs about 14 times in the last 2 years cause he will try something out and find out its not what he wanted to do and move on to something else.

If you are dead set on getting into that field though, I would strongly suggest you go out and get you CDL first, every operator we have worked with is required to have one here, that goes for semi trucks to construction vehicles. Having that alone can open up some doors for you in that field.

As for college, don't go just to say you went. Dont go in blind not knowing why you are going. Going in like that will just make you hate it even more. If you go in with an idea of what you want to do by the time you are done it will be a much more enjoyable time and much more rewarding in the end.
