From what I can dig up on the net, "Norinco 1911s, while not a premium .45 overall, have some of the best forged steel slides and frames of any make. That's why top-tier gunsmiths, like Wilson Combat, will accept them for customization....unlike the recently-popular Phillipine imports."
Personally I'd pick up a nice Springfield 1911 mil spec, it'll serve you well and they run in the $5-6 hundred range.
