With my 18th birthday approaching, I have been considering a tattoo, not as much to break out of my shell and proclaim my adulthood, but as a symbol to me that I am still human, and as a step in the right direction in my life. The pain is part of my growing up as yes, I'm still immature at times. I was thinking of getting the tattoo on my left inner wrist, a black and red star, symbolizing finding my way, I know that these are painful, but if any of you have experience with these kinds, how bad was it? The pain will be a big part of it, but with the way I've felt lately (disconnected with reality, everything feeling surreal) I think that it is a vital step in my life. Comments, please.

I personally have 7 tattoos, but not one on my wrist like you want. However, I've been friends with a few tattooists and been into tattoos most my life. Tattoos in that area are indeed painful and difficult to take care of.
The reason they hurt is simply too many nerve endings & not enough muscle. I really dont get too bothered by needles or pain of the tattooing type, so you may be just fine. Then again, you might not be able to take it. Remember, when paying for those kind of tattoos you are wasting your money if you move around alot or if you bail out cuz it "hurt" too much thru the middle of it. I suggest you really look into this and make sure its the right move for you. Maybe you should consider a tattoo in a less visible area first? I would at least talk with a tattoo artist or two and get their views on it.
One last thing...you have to remember that this is something that will be visible all the time on your wrist unless you wear something to cover it up, not to mention while it heals will be in an area where you grab, curl, touch, and lift with your hands/wrists. It may get bumped, banged, or become a pain when trying to do things. Not to mention that your hand/wrist may be sore/swollen from the tattoo.
I like tattoos and it sounds like it could be really nice because it has a special meaning to you. All tattoos should be that way. It's just my own .02, but I think getting a tattoo just to look cool is stupid. Tattooing is an expression of one's self-image. Good luck and hopefully you get that tattoo!
I agree with DR on this one. The wrist is a painful place to get one. I would go to the shoulder or somewhere like that for your first. It is nice to see you are getting something that has meaning to you and not just some piece of flash picked at random off of the wall.
I have both of my inner wrist tattooed. The pain is bad...but not the worst I've ever flet.
I kinda giggled through it. Then I had to go back for touch ups..and he had to go over them 2 more times cause my skin is thick.
I got 5 done that day. Most on boney areas which hurt more.
I love mine.

Why do people pierce their ears...
Why do people dye their hair..
Why do people have cosmetic surgery..
It's a personal decision. I am a Christian and I have no convictions about tattoos. I enjoy them. They are art to me also.
I have a scripture tattooed on one of my wrist. It gives me an opportunity to witness and give a testimony also if the right time.
It's all about one's beliefs. I don't have conviction about them but I wouldn't force my belief on anyone. So..why?
All depends on the person who got them. Different people have different answers.

I have a tat as well. But would never get one that can't be hidden. I don't know what you want to do with your life, But if you get into the professional world, you might want to think of where you put it.
Yeah...one must consider career choices.
I work in the medical field myself...but some doctors I come across don't seem to mind them. They younger doctors anyway...

I disagree to a point. You obviously want to keep your tattoos classy if they are visible. It all depends on a career path and your desires in life. Some people dont like to see them on professional people, others do. I am a computer technician for Indiana University and I work for their Dental School. Several students and even a few faculty have piercings/tattoos.....and I dont just mean hidden ones....
It all comes down to what you want to do. My tattoos are visible, and I personally dont care who doesnt like them. I can cover them if I wish, but I would never get my face/neck tattooed.

Thats the same thing my friend told me when I told him I was going to get one, but then I thought "Then why bother with the pain, and the money if you're going to hide it all the time"? I just dont get why people do it; if they dont want to show the world. Its a waste of money, pain and glory of the whole tattoo experience. If you are afraid that its going to hurt your career; here's a simple thought...."DONT GET ONE!!!!"
