You have to make sure you are at Top Dead Center(TDC) before replacing your wires.
Pull out your #1 plug, put a finger tip in the hole and tap the starter little bits until it blows by your finger
After this, check your timing mark on the crank pulley, it should be pretty close to zero.
Now pull off your distributor cap, the plug that the rotor is pointing to is now number one, continue with your diagram in replacing your wires.
When this is done. it should fire and run.
Now get a timing light and time it.
If you don't have a haynes or chiltons manual for your specific vehicle, get one. Follow the procedure for timing and you should be good.
On a side note, the picture you a acquired for the firing order is for reference on which direction the rotor is turning and the subsequent order they fire in, it does not represent where the wires are supposed to be in relation to the front of the motor or the vaccum diaphram, if it has one.
Wherever the rotor is pointed at TDC is the #1 cylinder wire.
