Default V6 clutch question

Does anyone know the difference in the clutch assy. between the early (87-90) V6 and the latter (V6 94-96) ?

I know the spline count is different, but other then that?

The reason I ask, I need to put a clutch in mine, (87 V6) And I have a 10 spline NV3500 I would like to go ahead and swap to. I eventually plan to put a 5.9 magnum in, but not right now.

So what I want to do is use the 94-96 V6 clutch kit in my 87 V6 and hopefully it would bolt to my 87 flywheel and work with my NV3500 transmission.

So, no opinions on being able to use the newer clutch in the 87?

I always thought that as far as the clutch goes that the spline count was the same. But on some sites they have a newer and older version clutch do sale. Maybe it's a 10 spline but a smaller diameter. Bc wasn't there an increase in input shaft diameter for more strength but still same spline count? I personally am not sure what the difference is I have not looked at the older styles up close.

Actually the 87-90? used a 10&3/8 disc, 1in x 23 spline. The 92 and up ? V6 used a 10&3/8 1&1/8 in X 10 spline.
The best I can tell, some companys show the latter being 10&3/8, some say 10.4 and some say 10&1/2 dia.
I dont know if there are any other differences in the years other then spline count. ie. is the bolt pattern for the pressure plate to the flywheel the same? Any differences in depth, etc. that would make it not work on my 87.

Thanks for your input.

I believe another possibility would be, If I found a 5.2-318 flywheel pretty cheap, I could go ahead and use a 11in. clutch assy. Then I could use the 11in.clutch with my 5.9 conversion. But either way, Im going to be wasting money on a smaller clutch that will eventualy be replaced when I put a 5.9 in the truck or a neutral flywheel.

I personally am going to be running a 12 inch clutch with my 5.9 build. Will be 1 1/8 shaft with 10 spline.

So what you're thinking is, run the 11 inch clutch assy now, with a 5.2 flywheel, then when you install the 5.9, switch to an externally balanced 5.9 flywheel? That's seems like a good way to approach it.

I have an extra 5.2 flywheel I bought several years ago for $60 plus shipping. I'd let it go for $40 for such a worthy cause!

ragged, sorry to be so long getting back. Been out of town and just got back last night.
If you could pm me, I can give you a shipping address, so then you could give me a total price with shipping, and I will send you the money.
Thanks for helping me out!!

I'm the king of delayed responses so no compliants here. OK, I'll pm you. You probably know it's a heavy sucker, but I'll find the best shipping option, or whatever suits you.
