When I did the swap on mine, I had to take the seats out. The brackets that hold the center part of the bench seat in place are riveted to the frame of the buckets on each side.
IIRC, the center section is bolted to the brackets so you can unbolt and separate the buckets from the center bench, but to remove the brackets from the bucket seat frames, you have to cut them off or drill out the rivets. The brackets will get in the way of a center console, so they have to come off.
That probably sounds as clear as mud, but once you remove the bench and flip it on it's back, you will see what I mean.
The holes should already be in the floor for the center console.. Mine came with a bench seat and had the holes already there for the console bolts. They just filled them with body seam sealant.
Just to clarify, I am talking about the 40-20-40 seats like this one

Yeah, I found a console in good shape from an 01 Durango. It fit perfect.
It's not that big of a deal really, 8 bolts, 4 on each seat, and the bench will slide out. Then 4 bolts on the underside of the center piece to separate the buckets.
I used a 4 inch cutoff wheel and cut the brackets off. I didn't plan on ever reinstalling the bench part so there was no reason to take the brackets off whole.
