Only reason I'm doing this, is for forza. It didn't come with a controller though, do you know if a PC USB gamepad would work with a 360? I figure it has all the buttons that an xbox controller has, plus the rumble motors and analog sticks, so maybe there's hope.
Awesome. Fix it well. You don't want to be fixing it over and over again.

I know "Games for Windows" controllers will work on the 360 but I'm not sure about anything else. I've never done that.

50 is steep unless its an elite... I have fixed 7 or so, 3 of which were HDMI's... I usually snag them from 25-40 bucks. most are shipped at that price.

Let me know if you run into any snags, I will try to help ya out.

Was it just an RROD or was it E74?

Well I have the xbox apart, and the heatsinks off, just need to clean up the old thermal paste and apply the new stuff, then cook it and reassemble.

What I did was remove heatsinks, clean the chips, apply new paste and bolt down the heatsinks with nylon washers. Then you turn it on for a few minutes without the fans until it overheats(2 red lights), let it cool down and it normally works. Tried that a couple times and then noticed a problem on the bottom of the board(looked like one of the tiny integrated circuits had fallen off). So knowing that the board was already damaged beyond repair, I made the guy give me a refund because he misrepresented it.

thats just an X-clamp fix. Sounds like someone had tried heating that board before, and got it too hot. Probably best that you didnt end up with that one.

Ebay has hidden gems, but a lot of those consoles are just turds that people tried to fix but f ed up beyond repair...

good luck finding a repairable one, they are out there, you just might have to dig for a while to get a good one. (I would look for an HDMI box... they had better compnents)
