I am in love with the Springfield XD series. I have an XD-45 and it is hands down the best slide action pistol ive ever shot. its very similar to a glock, but blows them out of the water IMO. And, with the buffer recoil spring they put in them, my 110lbs wife shoots my .45 all day with no problems.
In summer I tend to carry a Taurus Millenium PT111 (9mm) mainly because it's so small & light, especially if I'm in Florida where I have to carry concealed. If I'm in Ga. (where I can carry open) or in the winter, I'll tend to carry my favorite handgun which is a Springfield 1911a (.45 acp).
If I'm hunting or fishing, I'll usually carry a Ruger Redhawk .44 Magnum, loaded with 3 snake shot rounds and 3 hydra-shocks...

Yes, that is a gun in my pocket and No, I am not happy to see you!
My favorite handgun is the Taurus Raging Bull, 6.5 inch barrel, chambered in .44 Magnum. It's big, it's heavy, but it just feels so right. Admittedly though, when I get my concealed carry, I'll probably get a Springfield XD .45 or a Kimber 1911 .45, just for practicality's sake. I'm a big guy, but a Raging Bull still wouldn't hide very well.
This image is of one chambered in .454 Casull, but you get the idea...
And the Kimber

You ever shoot that thing in .454 P-man? That's the only round that I don't enjoy shooting. Now you know how big I am (6'2" and about 280 lbs.) and both times I've shot one, I've shot 5 rounds and set the gun down for the day! By contrast, I won't say that it doesn't have some kick, but I've shot probably 72 rounds or so on a given day at the range from my .44...

Mine is a .44, and no, I've never shot it in .454 Casull, but I've heard the same thing; it kicks like an angry mule. Have you ever shot one of the S&W .500 revolvers? I almost dropped the damned thing, and my wrist hurt for about four days. And I'm not really any smaller than you, 6'3" and about 260.

I've shot a Colt .45 (1911 I believe) and a Beretta 92FS 9mm, and I loved both. So much so, that I own a Beretta 92FS myself. It just fits my hand, and I can shoot the heck out of it. A buddy of mine has a Glock, and I just couldn't get over the hard plastic feel of it...it just seemed cheap. I've got rubber grips on my 92FS, so it just fits in my hand.
Only problem is, my wife can't shoot it...it has a surprising amount of kick. I'd say its almost as much as the 1911.
Any suggestions on a small caliber handgun? I've been looking at a Ruger .22LR, can't remember the model. I want something small but not subcompact, and easy to "point and shoot".

Always have a Sig Sauer P229 in .40 on my hip and a Ruger GP100 .357 in the center console. My Concorde console is a little smaller so I have to put my Bersa .380 in there.

My favorite auto is my Beretta 96 in .40 cal. My favorite revolver is my Smith & Wesson 586 distinguished combat magnum in .357 cal. with 8 3/8 barrel. Haven't shot the beretta much, but have put tons of rounds thru the smith. My next purchase, probably in the spring, is a smith 500 mag.
