The firearm you are refering to is a .45 colt caliber pistol that will also accept .410 shotgun shells. There are several manufacturers, Taurus being just one.
A word to the wise, pick a firearm that you are comfortable with, that doesnt beat you up with recoil and is reliable. A 20 gauge pump shotgun loaded with buckshot is an awesome home defense weapon and will make up for shakey adrenalin pumped shots in the middle of the night. As for a pistol, I would look for a revolver that fits your hand and is comfortable to shoot. A Smith and Wesson 686 in .357 Mag would be A good choice, as it can be loaded with .38 special ammo untill you get used to the recoil. The 686 is a fairly heavy pistol and will absorb A lot of the recoil into itself. For something smaller, look at A Ruger sp101, smaller revolver with a reputation for reliability, it can also be loaded with .38 special ammo untill you feel ready for full house Magnums.
As with any firearm, PRACTICE! burn ammo untill you are comfortable with it. .38 ammo is A lot cheaper than .357 Magnum ammo, so practice with .38's and fire enough .357 to be confident in your ability to hit a target under stressfull conditions. Home defense shootings rarely happen at more than 15 feet, so leave the long range stuff for the high noon gunfighters on TV.

eventually i want to get amanda to a range, and we will see what she can handle. im not a little guy, and the little experience that i have was with a glock most recently, along with bolt action rifles, and a few shotguns, but its been a while. my concern with a shotgun is her ability to handle it...so something in a smaller handgun would be nice for her...but many people have suggested exactly what you have, with the 357, using .38 rounds.
ive also taken into consideration all of the realistic distances that i could be shooting, should a situation arise...including the travel of a bullet through the house, etc. the biggest distance that i could shoot in a straight line would be around 25 feet, unless i was correcting someones error of messing with one of the vehicles, but that wouldnt be much further.

It's the Judge, horsey is on top of his game. Not a bad short range self defense gun, but it kicks a bit. Made popular by that 70 year old Miami woman judge that carried it...

Yes, that is a gun in my pocket and No, I am not happy to see you!
Be wary of autoloaders in womens hands, not trying to be sexist, but most women, unless they are experienced shooters, can cause auto's to jam from "limp wristing" or not holding the weapon firmly enough to let the inertia of the slide cycle all the way through. This will more times than not cause a stove pipe jam, you will see a loaded round from the magazine pointing straight up in the ejection port. Thats why I always recomend a revolver for inexperienced shooters. The Ruger SP101 would be perfect for a womans smaller hands.

Yup, my grandfather has one, very nice gun. He keeps that and two .357 Sigs for defense around the house.
