So, as some of you may know, I am a head school hockey coach.
This past week, a 16 year old kid came to school with a handgun. I dont have any specifics, but it was found afterward that it was loaded.
He approached another kid, demanding his lunch money..and when the kid told him no, the guy pulled out the gun and again demanded money. the bell rang, and startled the 'gunman', and the rush of students into the hallway gave the other kid a chance to run. the gunman fled the school and was caught later with the gun, loaded as i mentioned before.
Im by no means liberal, nor do i have many views that could be considered liberal...but i think that this kid should go down hard. Ive heard some arguments that he didnt ultimately do anything wrong, as no one was harmed, but I think that this situation should result in an incredibly harsh penalty...and im curious what those who are very pro-gun would think about this.

He pulled a gun on another person and demanded money. That's against the law in any state. I personally disagree with the "gun free zone" policy around schools, colleges, etc, but that's irrelevant to this situation. A 16 year old has no business with a handgun outside of a range. He's a thug, like every other criminal dirtbag, he should be spending some time behind bars.

He's 16 years old, he's not a "kid". He's old enough to be tried as an adult. Attempted armed robbery IS against the law. Having a gun in a "gun free zone" is against the law. Minor with a handgun IS against the law. They should come down on him hard. If he got the gun from home, his parent/guardian should be punished as well. If someone sold him the gun, they should be punished. If he had pulled the gun on me, he would have been a real "dropout". Dropped out of the human race.

some people are working the "hes only a kid...he doesnt know any better"...
That's bullsh*t. Ask any four year old if it's wrong to pull a gun on someone, bet you they'll all know it's wrong. I'd like to know where he got the gun from, if mommy or daddy left it out where anyone could get at it or if he stole it.

Remember I'm the guy that takes "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" quite literally. From what you've told us Pat, there is no reason this kid should not be tried as an adult and jailed.
