I'm sorry if this is a duplicate post. But I've search the forums for this problem, thought I found it. But nothing has worked.
I have a 2007 dodge Ram 1500 3.7l V6 with 46,000 miles on it. I went to start it last monday to go to work and it stalls out. It will start, but if the gas pedal isn't pressed it will putter for 10-15 seconds then shut off. If I give it gas nothing sounds wrong. Once I let off the gas it will stall in about 5 seconds. I took it to one garage and they told me it was the map sensor and the plugs, and that it wasn't a fuel problem(that's what I told them I thought it was). Wanting to charge me an arm an a leg I change the map sensor and the plugs myself. The old plugs were fouled. I tried to start it again and the same thing happened. I put a scanner on it and got po300(random/multiple cylinder misfire) and po301(cylinder 1 misfire). I thought maybe it was the coil on the first cylinder so I changed it. Same thing. I read on this forum it might be a dirty throttle body, so I took it of and cleaned it. It wasn't horrible but it needed a good cleaning. I also cleaned off the sensor that was in the air resonator box. I tried starting it. Still the same thing. I'm thinking I'm probably going to bring it to the dealership. But 2 years old with 46,000 miles on it this is ridiculous. I had an eighth of a tank of gas in it so i put in a couple more gallons just to see if it did anythng. I saw on one forum it might be the idle air control, but my engine doesn't match the pictures in the Haynes book I have.Someone told me it might be the fuel sending unit. But at this point everyone I have talked to has their own opinion. There is also black soot coming out of the tailpipe, but no water. PLEASE HELP.

Is there just black soot buildup on the tailpipe b/c that's normal, but I usually don't see any actually coming out of the exhaust. It sounds like a fuel problem to me as well b/c I had a similar symptom on my old car where I went to start it one day and it would start and then die w/o giving it gas. It was the fuel pump and in your case I think it could be the fuel pump and/or fuel filter which is in the tank. Try posting in the 3rd gen section for more replies and advice as you probably won't get a lot in the v6 section.

Yea that amount of soot being visible on the street is unusual, I would look at the fuel system for your problem.

Today was a bummer. I took my ram to the dealership and they said I have no compression in my first cylinder. Best case scenario I have a bent spring which would be $600 off the top of his head. Worst case something else would be bent or broke and he said $2600 off the top of his head. This sucks. Only 2 years old. I don't drive my truck rough at all and never even towed anything. This might be the last time I ever buy Dodge. They're taking off the valve cover tomorrow and I'll know what it is for sure. I'm praying for a bent spring.
Shouldn't that be covered under the powertrain warranty? That really sucks, let us know how it turns out.
