This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2002-2008).

HomeLink allows you to control your garage door opener from the inside of your Dodge Ram 1500. You will need to follow a few steps to complete the programming process. However, these steps are easy to carry out and require only 5 to 10 minutes of your time. It's recommended that you park close to your garage door, as you will need to move quickly between your truck and your garage door opener in one of the steps. As well, you may want to start by placing a pair of fresh batteries into your garage door opener to ensure it has sufficient power to complete the programming process. Let's get started!

Materials Needed

  • Fresh batteries
  • Owner's manual
  • Garage door opener

Step 1 – Program the system

  • Locate the two outside buttons on your Homelink system.
  • Press and hold the buttons simultaneously.
  • A light will start to blink when the system is ready.
  • Release the buttons after it does.
  • This step should take no more than 30 seconds.

Step 2 – Sync the Homelink system to the transmitter

  • Choose which Homelink button you want to control your garage door.
  • You'll need to press and hold two buttons: the pre-programmed button you've just selected and the "transmit" button on your transmitter.
  • Do so until the programming process is finished.
  • The transmitter should be within approximately one to three inches of your Homelink system.
  • You will know the process is finished when the indicator light appears solid.
  • If it blinks rapidly, proceed to Step 3 to complete the programming process.
  • As well, if it blinks rapids and then goes solid, proceed to Step 3.

Step 3 – Head into your garage

Grab a ladder, if necessary, and press the "learn" button on your garage door opener. As soon as the red indicator light begins blinking, climb down from the ladder, if you required one, and head to your Dodge Ram 1500. You will only have 30 seconds to get from your garage and your truck to complete the programming process.

Pro Tip

The "learn" button might be located on the back of your garage door opener, so check there first.

Step 4 – Hurry back to your truck

Press the Homelink button you opted in Step 2 to control your garage door. Repeat this three additional times. Your garage door should now start to operate per your command.

Step 5 – Check the pre-programmed Homelink button

Open and close your garage door by pressing the pre-programmed Homelink button you selected in Step 2. Repeat the above steps if your garage door does not open when prompted.
