This article applies to the Dodge Ram (2002-2008).

You might not think twice about them when they are working correctly, but the door ajar switches are an integral part of the door latches on each door. When a door is opened, the switches close to ground the circuit for the instrument cluster, activating the interior lights. Unfortunately, these switches tend to go bad and can become damaged in Dodge Ram trucks. Fortunately, removing and replacing them is simple. Keep reading to learn about this DIY job.

Materials Needed

  • Wrench (12 or 14mm)
  • New door switch(es)

Pro Tip

  • Replacement switches for the Regular cab cost about $87.00 (part #55372843AA); $36 for the Quad cab (part #55372851AA).

Step 1 – Raise window and remove water dam

Locate the door switch that you believe to be faulty. Raise the window all the way up on that door. Remove the exterior water dam that seals the window to the door.

Step 2 – Disconnect actuator rods

Disconnect the actuator rods in the door (indicated by #2 in Figure 1). Unclip the door latch.

Step 3 – Remove bolts

Using a wrench, remove the three bolts (either 12 or 14mm) from the door latch (indicated by #4 in Figure 1).

Step 4 – Remove latch

Disconnect the electrical connector (#3 in Figure 1). Then, you'll be able to remove the latch. This step might take some patience.

Step 5 – Re-install door switch

Install the new door switch and reconnect the electrical connector. Re-secure the bolts you removed. Re-connect the actuator rods. Lastly, re-attach the water dam to the exterior of the door.
