Dodge Ram 2009-Present: How to Reset Oil Change Due Message

Reset the engine oil light to ensure you never miss another required oil change for your 4th generation Dodge Ram 1500.

This article applies to the Dodge Ram 1500 4th Generation (2009-Present).

One great feature in your 4th generation Dodge Ram is that it comes loaded with a technologically-advanced engine oil change indicator system, alerting you that it's time to change your truck's engine oil. Once the next scheduled oil due date comes around, your truck's dash will send you a warning message. The indicator light will flash for approximately 10 seconds. If this message appears before your truck is due for another oil change, don't panic. You can simply reset the message so it doesn't continue to flash every time you start the engine.

Materials Needed

  • Owner's manual
  • Engine oil

Step 1 – Turn on your ignition switch

  • Use your key to switch on the ignition, but do not crank the engine just yet.
  • An "oil change due" message will display on the dash's electronic vehicle information center (EVIC) system.
  • Press down on your gas pedal three times, making sure it touches the floor each time.
  • This step must be done within ten seconds of turning on the ignition.
  • Now turn off the ignition, wait for a short moment, and then start the engine.

Pro Tip

You may need to repeat this step several times before the message disappears from your EVIC system.

Step 2 – Check the maintenance schedule

If the warning light continues to flash after having been reset, you might need to change your truck's engine oil. If your engine oil was recently changed, you will need to check that the correct engine oil was added and that the engine oil filler plug is secure.

Pro Tip

It's recommended that you change your engine oil every 3,000 miles. However, adding high-performance synthetic engine oil will extend the number of miles you can travel before another oil change is due. In some cases, this might be every 6,000 miles.

Step 3 – Have the dealer reset your warning light

A local dealer can reset the warning light if you continue to have trouble.

  • If your Dodge Ram is under warranty, the dealer will reset your warning light free of charge. The "repair" should take several minutes to complete, assuming you have an appointment.
  • If your truck is no longer under warranty, don't panic. It's likely your dealer will reset the warning light free of charge, or for a small fee.
