Challenger Sets Naturally-aspirated Scat Pack Record: Track Time Tuesday

By -

Challenger Scat Pack with a built 6.4-liter Hemi runs a 10.64 at 125 miles per hour, quicker than many Hellcats.

The Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat took the world by storm when it was introduced back in 2014 for the 2015 model year and more recently, the new Demon and the Hellcat Redeye have gotten the majority of attention in the high performance world. As a result, some people forget about the Scat Pack models, which are no slouch with their 485-horsepower, naturally aspirated Hemi engines, but as the video above from the Torred Unicorn YouTube channel shows us, with a little work, the 6.4-liter Hemi can produce the power needed to run just as quick as the Hellcats.

Record-Setting Challenger

The Torred Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack in the video above is owned and driven by Delano McFarlane. The 392-cubic inch Hemi has been upgraded with a custom camshaft and ported cylinder heads from Modern Muscle Xtreme, along with headers, a ported intake manifold and HP Tuner software with a tweaked tune by Brent Hughes. The engine block, crank, rods and pistons are stock, as are the transmission, the torque convertor, the driveshaft, the rear differential and the half shafts.

To be clear, this car is not running nitrous oxide or a forced induction setup.

Other upgrades include lightweight Braum front seats, a Speedlogix rear seat delete, Viking suspension components, Spohn control arms, a differential brace and a 15-inch rear-wheel conversion package with 18-inch wheels up front. Obviously, McFarlane is running sticky drag radial tires out back to make the most of that power.

So McFarlane has added a bunch of power, cut a bunch of weight and modified the suspension to put all of that power to the ground, leading to the quickest, naturally-aspirated Challenger Scat Pack in the world.

Running the Numbers

In the video above, we watch as McFarlane makes nine blasts down the quarter mile. The footage begins with an explanation of what “naturally aspirated” means, pointing out that this Challenger is not equipped with nitrous oxide. After that, the good stuff begins.

On the first pass, MacFarlane runs a 10.72 at 126 miles per hour, followed up with a 10.67, a 10.71 and a 10.74, all with speeds in the 125 range. On the fifth run, the Scat Pack spins the tires hard coming out but the car still runs a 10.96 at 125 miles per hour.

Finally, on the last four runs of the video, this TorRed Challenger Scat Pack starts with a 10.71 and each run gets quicker, dropping to a 10.70, a 10.67 and a 10.64, setting the world record for the quickest naturally aspirated Scat Pack car.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
