With 1,025 horsepower and a 0-6 time of 1.66 seconds, the Demon 170 is the ultimate last hurrah for V8 muscle cars.

We’ve had it good, folks. The official end of the muscle car era is here. And thank goodness for Dodge. Did they decide to quietly fade into the sunset as electric cars take over? Nope. They decided to give EV’s one las sucker punch.

And this punch is called the Demon 170.

Ethanol is a fuel beloved by tuners for its ability to have a high octane rating. Being fermented and distilled, it’s basically moonshine fuel. And E85 by that measure is 170 proof. And that’s where we get The Dodge Demon 170. On E85, this monster pumps out 1,025 horsepower. And it’s not just a boosted version of the Redeye engine. It’s substantially different.

MotorAuthority details the changes, and they include a different cast iron block to better hold on to the cylinder heads. Those cylinder heads are under higher pressure now thanks to a 3.0 liter screw type supercharger pushing 21.3 psi into the block. Fueling was upgraded, too, with injectors that flow so much fuel, they can empty the tank in under 6 minutes.

Performance figures are impressive. And NHRA has already banned it (unless you buy the optional roll cage and parachute). It’ll hit 60 miles per hour in 1.66 seconds. 1/4 mile? 8.91 seconds at 151 miles per hour. You cannot buy a new car faster than this one. It’s equally impressive when you think that the car weighs 4,275 lbs.

While, sure, electric cars will satisfy most folks’ need for speed, it’ll miss the mark completely on another important aspect. Electric motors have no character. They work, or they don’t. And it’s sad to think that here will be an entire generation that will potentially never get their hands dirty working on doing spark plugs for the first time.

Or they won’t know what it’s like to hold the gas and the brake at a red light because of a vacuum leak. They won’t know the thrill of hearing an engine – that their own hands have worked on – roar back into life. We need to keep the enthusiasm alive. And thank you to Dodge for giving us one great last V8 motor to cherish.
