Ram TRX Gives a Modded Mustang GT Fits at the Drag Strip

This heavily-modified S550 Mustang had to really put up a fight to hold off the ultra-quick and ultra-heavy Ram TRX at the track.

As most are well aware, the S550-generation Ford Mustang is no slouch at the drag strip, particularly when it’s equipped with forced induction of some sort. These cars can easily rip off sub 10-second passes in the quarter-mile with the right upgrades, making them quite the menace at the track. However, it goes without saying that the Ram TRX is also mighty quick in a straight line, though in all fairness, no one would presumably expect it come close to beating a modded Mustang in that manner – but that’s precisely what happens in this new video from Drag Racing & Car Stuff.

With a supercharged V8 underhood cranking out 702 horsepower, the Ram TRX certainly has the guts to go fast, and the numbers back it up, with Ram claiming that its muscular pickup can do the quarter-mile in around 12.3 seconds. That’s certainly impressive for a massive truck rolling on massive tires that weighs a ton, but the example in this video isn’t exactly stock, either.

Then again, neither is the S550 Mustang that this one is lining up against, either. Both of these vehicles put on one heck of a show, with the TRX using its four-wheel launch to jump out to an early lead. The lighter Mustang soon reels it in, however, and these two modified machines are neck-and-neck for the rest of the track in one of the more thrilling races we’ve seen in some time.

By the time both cross the line, it’s a true photo finish, with the Ram TRX just barely missing out on a win with a 10.67-second pass at 127 mph versus the Mustang’s 10.63-second time at 133 mph. That latter figure tells the true story here, as the pony car was pickup up steam while the massive pickup was chugging along after its impressive start.

That stellar launch nearly made the difference here, but this finish is impressive by anyone’s measure, regardless. The TRX driver’s night wasn’t over quite yet, either – he winds up racing a Nissan GT-R later in the night, and also gives it a good run with a time of 10.62 seconds versus the sports car’s 10.46-second pass. Who knew that we’d be living in an era when off-road-focused pickups were giving sports cars a run for their money at the drag strip?
