Watch the 2021 Ram 2500 Get Torture Tested at the LA Auto Show

2021 Ram 2500 Limited LA Auto Show

We get to ride along in a 2021 Ram 2500 Limited and Laramie as both show off their incredible capabilities.

As most are well aware, automotive manufacturers subject their vehicles to some seriously tough torture testing during development to ensure that those vehicles can hold up to the many stressors of the real world. This is particularly important in the realm of modern pickup trucks, especially heavy-duty ones, which are generally purchased to tow or haul heavy loads over long distances. Recently, Dodge Forum Editor Derin Richardson got to experience a taste of this process in a pair of 2021 Dodge Ram 2500 pickups at the LA Auto Show.

Ram’s little gauntlet at the LA Auto Show was specifically designed to show off the capabilities of the 2021 Ram 2500 and includes a simulated rock wall that weighs a whopping 7,000 pounds. Here we get to see the Cummins diesel-powered Limited trim pickup pull that wall up from the ground using a strap while going backwards, which is quite impressive. The driver and passenger also get a nice look at what’s happening thanks to the truck’s 360-degree camera.

As our Ram rep points out, this particular pickup has a max towing capacity of around 17,000 pounds, which is pretty incredible, as well as a max payload capacity of just under 3,200 pounds. But there’s far more to this truck than that, as we soon find out.

The 2500 heads to the traction test next, which consists of a 30-degree climb upward, as we can see from the truck’s built-in gyroscope. The big rig ascends that steep “hill” with ease, then rolls back down it with zero drama.

The 2021 Ram 2500 then rolls over some taller bumps to show off its ground clearance, and does so with no jarring inside the cabin to boot. And while you’re doing all of this, you can enjoy the truck’s 19-speaker, 900-watt Harman Kardon stereo system, too. Next up, we get to see the more value-oriented Laramie trimmed 2500 tackle the same obstacles, which is does with ease.

The Laramie doesn’t have quite as many amenities as the Limited, but then again, not everyone needs cameras everywhere or more speakers than one can count on two hands. It also has even more max towing capacity than the Limited – 20,000 pounds – to boot.

All of this is very impressive stuff, and proves once again that we are truly living in the golden age of pickup trucks. Never before have trucks been so capable, yet so luxurious and feature-laden at the same time, and the 2021 Ram 1500 is clearly at the top of its class in that regard.
