Wicked Wednesday: 2014 Viper GTS Can Still Trade Punches with Newest Porsche 911 GT3

Viper GTS

The automotive world has been going gaga over the newest 911 GT3. But a 2014 Viper GTS can be just as fast and even more entertaining.

2014 is eight years ago now. Eight years in the life of a planet is just a blink of an eye. But eight years is a lifetime in the world of the automotive industry. For some context the Challenger Hellcat seems like it has been with us forever at this point. But it was not even available yet for the 2014 model year. And in the world of sportscars, technology advances even faster than regular models. So, the fact that a sportscar from 2014 can complete with a 2022 model is impressive. And when that 2022 model is a Porsche 911 GT3 Touring, that feat is even more remarkable. But here we are. The 2014 Viper GTS is very different than the Porsche. However, there are some similarities. And the performance might be closer than you think.

This week’s “Wicked Wednesday” is all about the 2014 Viper GTS. It was recently featured in a video posted on the Throttle House YouTube channel. In this video the hosts of the video pit the eight-year-old Viper GTS against the 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Touring. For those not familiar with Porsche the GT3 Touring is slightly less track focused than the regular GT3 because it does not have the large rear wing. But it does still have the same 9,000 RPM redline screaming 6-cylinder engine, same suspension, and so forth. It is widely regarded as one of the best sportscars in the world today. It is almost impossible to get an allocation, and buyers that can buy one are paying six-figure dealer markups. It is a fabulous car. But the significantly older, 2014 Viper GTS might be even better.

The Viper packs an 8.4L naturally aspirated V10 engine. Eight point four liters. In 2022 with the world going electric it is almost unbelievable to think that an engine like this was available to us back in 2014. It belts out 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. Both figures are well above what the Porsche can muster.

It can also hit 60 mph in around 3 seconds and tops out over 200 mph. Both on par with the new Porsche. The Viper has a 6-speed manual transmission, which is also an option on the Porsche. The Viper has another trick up its sleeve. It is just bad ass. The Porsche is technically brilliant, but the Viper is a whole different thrill. It just beats the pavement into submission.

Loveable

Why is the Viper GTS so loveable? Because it is bold, and brash, and powerful. Open that hood and stare at the beauty of the V10. Pop the engine compartment on the 911 and you have some cheap looking plastic fans to look at. Boring. The Viper GTS is also rare. There are not many GT3 Touring cars on the road either, but to most people they just look like one of the million other 911s. Nothing else looks like this Viper GTS.

When was the last time you saw one in traffic? The performance is one par with the Porsche, but it is delivered in a bolder fashion. The Viper doesn’t have the option of 10 different types of coordinated stitching. Good! It has a simple cockpit behind an engine that would look at home in a freight train.

Value Equation

With the silly markups right now, it will cost you about $300,000 to land a GT3 Touring. A nice Viper GTS would be about $100K to $150K less. Both cars will hold their value well, and likely even increase at some point in the future.

The Viper might have a bit more of a love it or hate it vibe. But to those that love it (count us in) there is nothing else that will do. Buy yours now because they will not be getting cheaper anytime soon.
