89 Dakota rear axle
 

I need a 89 Dakota 2wd rear axle 8.25. is there any other vehicles I can get one from that will bolt up. and what Dakota years can I get one from that will bolt right up if I can find one.

87-90 Dakota 2WD is about it for "bolt right up".

91-96 also bolts up, but the axle shafts are 6 stud not 5 stud.

4WD is flipped spring landings; it'll raise the back of the truck something like 2 or 3 inches.

As you're looking, don't forget to check the ratio (that'll make a bit of difference) and you might want to check car-part.com for possible sources.

Ive used one from a 94 in a 90 before, had to swap axles and yoke from original rear end. otherwise went right in.

I have a 90 dakota with a 318 and 700 tranny. Blew out the rear end lastnight

Yeah its a 727 and 2wd it seems like they are hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Thanx i will check that sight.

Depends on what the 318 has had done to it.

It's not factory unless it's a Shelby, and Dakotas never had the 727 (Chrysler had dropped it for the 518 with the lockup torque converter back in the 70's.) But a 1990 wouldn't have been 3 speed, it'd been 4 speed (3 speed plus integral overdrive).

So I'd take what the motor's had done to it, and work from there.

Also, how do you drive? Mostly highway, mostly in town, quarter mile at a time?

Correction: The 518 was the 4 speed; 3 speed was probably a 904. The V6 got a 998/999 3 speed auto; but even that had been discontinued by 1990 for the Dakota (was on some of the other trucks, though.)
