wheel bearings
 

my wheel bearings went bad on the front drivers side. so I bought them and plan on replacing them tomorrow. my questions are do you gotta take off the caliper to do the inside bearing? next question is what tools and socket sizes will I need because its parked on the side of the road I'm getting dropped off at it so I need to have everything with me that I am going to need. its a 93 2wd 3.9 btw. thank you in advance

You will need to pull the rotor completely off to get the inner bearing. You also need to replace the bearing races, otherwise, you will be right back on the side of the road in relatively short order. You would be better off having the truck towed to where your tools are, rather than sitting on the side of the road, and discovering that you need another tool.......

Im having a problem keeping my hub assembly in place. Bearings went bad so i bought a whole hub assembly but after i took the caliber off the hub came right off. Put the new on on and it wont stay. It wobbles even after i put the caliber back on

When the 'hub came right off", did you remove the inner races from the spindle? Did you put new, freshly packed wheel bearings on? Did you put a spindle nut on and properly torque it?

To be that loose, you've missed something.

i didnt put the outer bearings in. I thought the hub assembly came with the bearings. But now im having trouble getting the old race off.

This is the old race from the old bearings. Ive tried everyrhing to get it off. Any suggestions?

Update: i cut it but i cut to far. Is this fixable?

By replacing the spindle.

It MIGHT be OK; I'm a coward, I made DAMN sure to not notch mine and later replaced the spindles anyway.

They may be hard to find - seems like the only early-1st-gens I could find were 4x4 locally, had to order a set.

A few guys at Napa gave me their knowhow and said it would be fine since its only about an 1/8 of the way through if that. I put it back together and it runs good.

Get some strips of emory cloth and polish it. Keep at it until you feel NO sharp edges. Your finger should slide over it without catching. Your fingernail will catch in the small cut but if the edges of the cut are polished, it'll be fine. Before you reassemble it, clean the snot out of it with brake cleaner. When you think you have it clean, wrap a ceramic magnet in a paper towel and rub all over it. This will catch any small ferrous grit that might be left. Clean it one more time and put everything together. That spindle will probably look new with all the cleaning. This sounds worse than it will really be. It will just make sure you don't get any grit in the grease that will chew the new bearings up. Once it's back together, the repair will probably out last the truck.
