Default '91 standard trans stick won't stay in reverse

Hoping for a cheap and simple solution over here. When i put my truck in reverse, the shifter won't stay put. I have to hold pressure on the stick to make it stay in gear while backing up. What's happening? Linkage issue? Thanks!

What engine/trans?

Could just be some worn bushings inside the trans, that don't allow the gears to full engage.

I have the 3.9 la motor; dont know what to call the standard 5 spd transmission. tragic that those bushings you referred are located on the inside; that would be a beefy repair bill.

Where is your shift linkage? Does the lever go directly into the trans, or are there linkages on the side of the trans?
