1995 dodge dakota speedometer doesn't work

Everything else is working but the speedometer isn't working is there a fuse or something to change (fuse under the hood?) Help.:o

Its probably the speedo sensor. check the wires make sure is connected correctly and replace if needed. The sensor is located on the rear of the transfer-case.

Thanks. I was hoping it would be something dumb easier. Is this the reason its sucking the gas down so badly someone said it might be because its not being told to shift? Does that make sense?

Well 1st thru 3rd gear are hydraulically controlled, so that's probably not it. Overdrive and the torque converter lockup switch I believe are controlled by speed (please correct me if I'm wrong) so that might cause a problem with those.

Replaced Transmission Speed Sensor

3 Attachment(s)
I have a 1995 Dakota Sport 5.2 and the same thing happened to me. No speedometer, no odometer and shifted rough. Here's what my transmission speed sensor looked like and what it should look like. Notice the tip on the new one and the lack of a sensor tip on the old one. After replacing with AZ part #SU394 everything is working as it should. You will need to rewire the wiring harness with the wires and harness that come with the sensor. It's a very easy fix and can be done in less than 30 minutes.

I know this is a old thread but is mine the only one with a actual speedo Geer on the speed sensor?

No; ALL of the 1st Gen Dakotas have one.

The difference is that starting with 1994, the VSS is what drove the speedometer, not a cable.
