Turbo Question

If the point of a turbo charger is to force more air into the engine causing better performance why would you not use a small shop air compressor put a connection nipple on the air intake filter housing put the air compressor in a tool box in the back of the truck run a air hose to the engine and control the boost with a simple valve in the cab of the truck. Now if there is some fundamental flaw i am missing other than the cool sound of the turbo vs the sound of an air compressor i would like to know!

Thanks

I'm sure someone has tried it. But you need more Volume into the engine then PSI. Think of a normal air hose nozzle vs a leaf blower. The air hose may have more PSI but it will not be able to put out the volume a leaf blower could put out.

But if you want hook up a compressor and post up a video and see what your 0-60 times do go for it.

Heck someone has hooked up a leaf blower to the engine and made 10more HP on the dyno.

A 318 at 5000rpm is inhaling 414 cubic feet/min of air. You will not find an air compressor that will flow that much air.

Exactly. A full air compressor tank, if you could unleash the air into the intake at a high enough volume, would last maybe a few seconds.

Get a real turbo, they're a lot more fun :D

A hood scoop will give you a couple extra horsepower with the ram effect and even more hp with the cold air it will be sucking in. When I am cruising around at 45 mph there is a significant amount of air coming through the floor vents and the dash vents with the AC and fan off.
