rear axle compatibility

I have a '96 dakota that needs a new rear axle. Its specs are 3.9 v6, manual trans, 4x4, extended cab. I have another truck for parts that I want to take the rear axle off of and use it one my 96. The parts truck is a '93, 5.2 v8, auto trans, extended cab, 4x4. I am planning on using the same driveshaft and everything, all I need is the rear axle off of it. Are the two axles compatible or are they different? Does anyone know. THanks.

Yes it will work. They both should be Chry 8.25 axles. Its best to keep the same gear ratio. Most common is 3.55. There is the 3.9 which will help if the new one has it. The only other difference is the brake sizes, there were 9in and 10in. The 10in is good upgrade for the 9in.

Obviously with a 4x4 you have to check the gear ratios
10-4 on the larger brakes
If they stop too quickly (lock up on sand/ snow) put in smaller wheel cylinders or an adjustable proportioning valve

thanks for the quick reply and im glad to know they are the same. I will check on the ratios and brake sizes, i think now i have the 10in but im really not that sure.
