Ignition switch wires. which color does what?
After getting fed up with my ignition problems, I clipped all the ignition switch wires and put in a racecar engineering switch panel with Ign. Acc. and a starter button.
The wire colors for the ignition switch are: Red Yellow Blue Solid Black Black/red Pink/black: Main power. Gray/black. I got the Red, Blue, hooked up to the Pink/black through the Ign. switch and the Yellow wire hooked up for the Starter. which leaves the gray/black and the solid black. The Black wire isn't grounded, tried it with a test light hooked up to power and touching it to a hot wire, Tried grounding it out, doesn't do nothin. The thinner gray/black wire, seems to be a power wire. but anytime I run power through it or ground it with a switch it doesn't do anything. which confuses me. so my question is, What is the solid Black and gray/black wires purposes? I've looked at schematics and diagrams and none of them say what they are for. Keep in mind the truck runs at it is, everything except the radio comes on. Gauges and whatnot. so I have no clue what they do. any help very much appreciated! |
Quick 30 second look at the wiring diagram shows the black powers the fuse #9-12 for the cigarette lighter, radio, turns, wipers in the RUN and ACC position.
Since this is the perfect time to do what I did is to isolate the cigarette lighter circuit and splice into an all time power to keep it powered at all times if you want to charge your phone ect without leaving the key in the ignition. Grey and black powers the Rear Wheel ABS module in the START position only. |

That is what I did to keep it powered at all times if you want to charge your phone ect without leaving the key in the ignition.

I looked in the factory service manual we have in the FAQ that is free to download. Also I edited my previous post to include more details.
