Dodge Dakota - Won't stay running
 

I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 3.9 that I recently dropped a straight drive motor into that was an automatic.

I replaced the timing chain and fuel pump. The problem is that it won't run but a few minutes and then it shuts off. It makes a sucking sound and starts missing and shuts off like it's starved for gas even though there's plenty.

All the codes are fine, and the wiring and sensors are fine, too. I had an auto-electric place check it out and they it's good there.

What could be the problem?

How do you know there's "plenty of gas"? What pressure is the fuel system running at?

And - "straight drive motor into that was an automatic" I gather you mean "a manual transmission motor to replace an old automatic transmission motor", right?

Did you verify the timing was right on the crankshaft?

Was it working before replacing the fuel pump in the tank? If so, why replace the fuel pump?

How free flowing is the exhaust? A plugged exhaust system will do this if it's completely plugged.

I'd grab the factory service manual and start with its troubleshooting trees to simplify the troubleshooting and to avoid people asking "Did you do blah".

I put plenty of gas in it and the pressure has been checked and it's good.

And yeah that's what I meant by the motors.

The motor wasn't working at all and I thought the fuel pump was the problem and that's why I replaced it.

As far as the exhaust is concerned it's a straight pipe. It's not plugged.

And I took it to a place and they say there isn't anything wrong with the sensors or anything. Probably just have to try and figure it out myself.

Timing Good? If everything else has checked out ok, I would recheck that.

I had the same symptoms turned out to be a crank position sensor on the right side of bell housing.
