What's leaking?
Hello everyone!
1995 5.2L 4x4, just crossed over 150k I have an oil leak, think it may be the rear main seal. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...1b9465d85f.jpg Front of block. What would cause this leak? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...e0697e2838.jpg Rear of block. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dodgefo...227f0bace4.jpg Rear again, looking up at it on my back. Thoughts? Am I facing a rear main? Also, on that second picture.... that little hole on the transmission between those two oil drops... is that supposed to be there? Just curious, I'm new to Dakotas. Thanks, Sean |

Rear seal, and I bet it's time to replace the gasket on the drain plug.
Also, I think the front seal is leaking some. But, I'd also check the fluid that's leaking (put a cardboard plate down, ideally white, and see what is dripping), in case it's a rear freeze plug or a front transmission seal. Oh, the rear seal is a lot more common ... but there's at least two other fluids that can be leaking out there, and it'd be nice to know for sure. (Can even be more than 2 - I had rear seal AND freeze plugs when I took my truck in to get the freeze plugs done!) RwP |
I figured rear seal, just wanted some confirmation.... and possibly front seal, too. lovely.
I'll get under there and see if there's any red there too.... hopefully not. Is that little hole there just a vent or something? I don't think I should worry, but I just want to be sure. |
It's a drain vent if you're talking about the "little hole" I think you are, in case the rear seal and/or the tranny front seal blows.
Front seal isn't bad ... pull the balancer, use a seal puller, there's tools to drive the new one back in, use a "seal repair" on the balancer or replace it, and you're golden. RwP |
Thanks, that would be the one! I figured it was something useful that was supposed to be there.... thanks!
I might tackle this job in a couple weeks, I haven't quite decided yet. |
