engine dead after pop sound
 
3.9 lit dakota,1993 was running fine then heard pop sound,engine died,cant start,fire at plugs and fuel pump working

Sounds like your timing chain needs to be replaced, with the distributor placed way on the back of the engine it's rather difficult to see where the rotor position is in relation to the timing marks on the damper.

Since you have spark, clean off the timing marks and chalk the mark your engine is supposed to fire on if the mark is way off when the light is triggered you'll know the chain needs to be replaced.

For an engine that still fires up, if the timing chain is wearing out the timing mark will waver from side to side of the chalked mark when the light is triggered.

Timing chain in good condition will hit dead on the mark every time the timing light is triggered.

Looking down on your engine the bank of cylinders furthest ahead will be your number one cylinder.
