Torsion Bar Questions and Sources
Hey all, I just purchased a really clean 1992 LE 4x4 club cab originally from Cali (no rust) and have a few questions.I have never owned a 1st gen...always had 2nd gen Daks.Do the torsion bars swap side to side or are they left and right? Also, does anyone have any sources for replacement bars?Have searched and can't find anything. Will later bars fit?Supreme Suspensions lists a lift key that fits from 1987 up to 2004....do these keys actually fit all years? My truck has the 5.2 V8 with the 2000lb bars...part#4322518-9 according to my parts book.It does not say L or R, but the parts places list different superseded parts numbers side to side and none available. Thanks for the help!

Why do you want to replace them? Not like they wear out. You can adjust them via bolt 33 in the pic there.
Lift keys (which would replace part number 31 in the pic) are just re-indexed keys. Don't know if they are actually worth the money. You can probably get more lift than the balljoints can deal with just using the stock keys, not to mention ending up to close to the bump stops. (makes for a harsh ride.)

I don't have the service manual in front of me but I do recall it saying to keep the torsion bars on the side it came from. If the parts manual shows the same part number, Maybe new they can go on either side, but once used they should be kept on the same side since they'll be used to twisting a certain way. I'm not sure.
If they're sagging just crank them up until they are back at spec height. I'm sure they'll lose some of their load carrying capacity, but I'd just crank them up again. In the service manual there is no spec for how many turns of the bolt to tighten the key, you just tighten it enough until its at ride height, however many turns it takes.
