Default What weight oil to run??

What oil do you guys run through your trucks? I imagine that the 3.9 and 318 guys probably run similar oils.

I'm not entirely sure what oil is being run through my truck currently, all I know is that the stuff in there is old, and needs to be changed. I'm thinking of going with 10W40 for the extra protection, and my truck has either 126k or 226k, can't tell. Likely 226K.

Any suggestions? I don't want to swap to synthetic if I don't need to, as the extra couple of bucks really adds up. Might just get a good high-mileage oil and run with that.

Is there any repurcussion for changing weights? I believe my truck currently has 10W40 but I've always been a fan of 5w30. I need something a little bit thinner as its going to be getting cold here pretty soon, and winter temperatures can drop below freezing easily.

I'd like to use a high mile oil too, but I'm apprehensive as this truck didn't get the maintenance it should've received, and I'm afraid she's got some "black death" issues.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on engine oil, but i dont know of any repurcussions of using different weights. It was advised back in the day to use different weights depending on how hot or cold it was. I also dont think that using high milage oil should be avoided due to a lack of maintenance. If its going to be cold i would think 5w30 should be fine, but when it warms back up you should probably go with 10w30 which is what our trucks' user manual says to use.

Usually older vehicles deal with changing weights well. Newer vehicles can't always handle it. I mostly run 10W30, but sometimes in the dead of winter, I'll run 5W30. I change brands often and have never had a problem.

Excellent- I think I'm going to be making the swap come Sunday, weather permitting. I like Mobil 1 products but I'm just gonna find a good SAE qualified oil and put that in, and likely change again in a month just to freshen things up a bit. I'm kinda new to the truck game, and not to sound spoiled but new to the used car game, so I am awefully **** about things I likely shouldn't be.

Truthfully, I bought the truck as a project but I wanna get off to a good start, and I figure the best step is to get all the basic maintenance caught up and then start tackling the demons... Figure I can eliminate the basic stuff from my problems equation.

I guess oil is oil is oil, right?

So who's the go-to guy about dual exhaust?? Lol

for conventional oil i have always used valvoline. castrol is pretty good too. might not hurt to run a bottle of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in there. for duals i would just go to any exahust shop to get it done. do you have a 3.9 or 318?

3.9, single in dual out flowmaster with no cat.

318 with same exahust

318 sounds better...lol.

I use a bottle of lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer in every oil change. I figure since our trucks take 5 quarts might as well buy a gallon jug of oil and a quart of the oil stabilizer.
