Default Just a couple of 42re - 46re questions

Hey there guys I just have a couple of questions with the 46re transmission. Is the automatic transmission run off the pcm or does it run like the old school automatic transmission where it shifts at certain rpm's and speedometer readings?

The 42/46R (96-up) versions are electronically controlled by the pcm(all shifts, everything). But basted off of your tag that you have a 92 Dakota you would have a 42RH The RH(95-down) are hydraulically controlled (automatically), only the OD and TCC are electronically controlled.

The RE series of transmissions are electronically controlled, RH is Hydraulically. So you know the naming scheme for CHrysler transmissions is:

4 - # of Gears
2/6 - Torque Rating (Higher is able to take more torque)
R - Rear WHeel Drive
E/H - Electricaly/Hydraulically controlled.

Thanks, and yes I do have the 42rh. Another question here, is there a way to turn a 46rh 4x4 to 4x2. Like can you remove the transfer case and add the yoke from the 42rh or will you have to leave the transfer case on and remoce the front driveshaft?

changing it from 4x4 to 4x2 can be done. there is a link in the faq for it. it requires splitting the trans in half and swapping the tail housings.
