See my note about "42RH/46RH"? I mean if the old and new transmissions are both 42RHs from 4WD vehicles, no problem. If, however, one is a 42RH (from the 3.9) and the other is a 46RH (from the 5.2), you may need a different drive shaft.
You'll also need to use the right torque converter.
(The TCs might change due to the transmission input shaft being different - or may not. Time to ask a transmission shop.)\

A 42rh (A500) won't last long behind a v8. Wasn't sure from your post which way you're going. The 46rh (A518) is what you want for your v8. The cross member mount and bell housing are the same. However the tail shaft on the A518 is .5 inches longer.

WHAT!?! no it isn't. They use the SAME tail housing from a 42/44 RH (A500) as they do on the 46RH (A518) the trannys are the same overall length either way. Dipstick and tube, converter, and inspection plate are all that is different between them, AS FAR AS SWAPPING ONE WHOLE UNIT IN PLACE OF THE OTHER is concerned..... pan is different, and internals are bigger on the 518 than the innards of the 500....as is the front half of the trans case. Don't quote me on this next part but I think you can swap valve bodies between them as well......
as far as how long a 42 will last behind a V8..... they CAN last if you don't drive like a bat out of He11.... the 42 and 44 are basically the same trans, the 44 just has more clutch discs within the clutch packs inside the trans as compared to the 42.
