Durango water pumps?

Does anybody else have as many problems with their water pump as I do?

Love my Durango but with 70K miles, this weekend I will be putting in the 5th water pump.

Has been done by either the dealer or a certified mechanic each time...

Looks like classic use of crappy water pumps. One issue might be that they do not bleed the system good enough or some type of movement on the fan is causing them to go out.

Please provide the engine and year that we are working on. To answer your question, no there isn't a problem with them. I had about 130K on mine and when I built it I replaced it as preventitve maintance. I was still good.

Also if you could provide what is exactly happening?

If you are on your 5th water pump as mentioned it probably has another issue causing them to go bad.

My Durango is a 99 with 5.9 ltr motor 4x4. The fan could be causing it? I also have a 98 Ram 1500 with the same motor with 98K miles and haven't had to replace the water pump yet. And the pumps that the dealer uses or my certified mech. don't use any rebuilt pumps. Only brand new ones from Dodge.

One word... MOPAR... Also, it wouldn't hurt to change the fan/clutch... I've had to replace TWO napa waterpumps IN A ROW... Not even in the vehicle 10 minutes and both failed... One was leaking and the other had a bad bearing, grease all over the inside of the cooling system... As soon as I put the Mopar pump in, SO smooth and SO quiet...

What type of fluid do you use? also what's the average temp where you live. I'm sure they or you have changed the thermostat by now... at least I hope so. dealers and mechanics can say they use a product that is brand new, but unless you by the part your self you really don't know. Next time it happens search for a new water pump and buy it then sit there with them and make sure no funny business is being done. I personally would not payfor the amount of pumps you've have.

I'm guessing it is falling back on either the fan clutch or the fan. Something is not balanced and it is causing these failures. I would change both personally. Get a new water pump and just pick up a fan from your local junkyard to save a few bucks there.
