I've got a 99 Durango that won't start after driving it. It will start fine when it's cold or just around town. When I drive it 25 to 30 miles, or more then shut it off, try to restart it I get nothing. No clicking nothing. All the electric works I can listen to the radio, roll the windows up and down. When I turn the key all the gauge lights work, but it won't turn over, I get nothing. I've replaced the starter, and the starter relay. After it sits for half an hour it will start right up, and run fine.

is cel on?

worth a try shake shifter -select N to start...think problem in park neu switch.

with hand on starter relay does it Click as someone tries to start?
probe the relay terminal 86 yellow wire for 12v when trying to start, ?

 

No it won't start in neutral either when it does this. Not sure about the remote starter question. I'll try the yellow wire and get back to you.

Could be a number of things
does the truck have factory security?

 

Yep it does, I've been wondering if maybe that would cause this problem.

 

Could be the battery believe it or not. Take out the battery and have it load tested and clean your terminals real good. Other than that could also be a burn in the wires going to the battery so feel them all the way down and clean the negative wire to ground connection while you are at it.

 

Wasn't there a TSB about the shifter not seating correctly when put in park? I know I got one but didn't have time to take it in.

 

could be the PCM...well known D fault...it shuts the vehicle down when its gets too hot.
mine blew on my 99 D in 2006...only solution is replace, but the new one put an extra cylinder of power on the engine for the price.
some people have put a bag of ice on the PCM to cool it off...try it next time and see if the D springs back to life...

I was going to mention a few other things, but was waiting for the results of kevs post, this way to see if we have power where and when we need it.

could be a bad ignition switch
could be PCM getting hot (as mentioned) has something to do with a resistor in it that causes this.
Park neutral issue, easy way to see if this is the issue is set the parking break, turn the key on, put it in reverse and see if the reverse lights come on. This will tell ya if your neutral park switch on the tranny is working (most of the time).

the other is shifter out of adjustment, you can visit your local auto parts store and read threw the haynes book (or down load the manual from pdftown.com) and learn how to adjust it correctly.


Well that should give ya a few ideals...

 

I've been waiting to try the bag of ice before I do anything. If that works I'll know what's wrong. Problem is it hasn't done it since I've been carrying ice packs with me. Figures right? I'll let you guys know if that works when it happens again.
