mobil 1 0w40 ok to use?
Hey guys and gals,
I have a 2000 durango 4.7, and it has the classic 4.7 cold start chatter that lasts about 40 seconds when you start it up after a while. A buddy of mine who has a 01 dakota with the 4.7 discovered by using mobil 1 0w30 that it greatly reduced the noise to almost nothing at all. I like mobil products, but i want a little more protection. I noticed the 4.7 was built by mercedes, and the 0w40 is recommended in mercedes engines by dealers and mechanics. so with that in mind, would it be ok to run the 0w40 instead of the 0w30? My truck has 155,000 mi on it. It does not leak or smoke, and the warranty is long gone. What do u guys think?
PS i was told the noise had to do with the lash adjusters

The only lubricants that should have the same additives are 10W-30 for normal conditions, 5W-30 for very cold conditions only, or 10W-40 but this brakes down to early.
Your issue is the filter being used doesn't have an anti-siphon valve in it. Basically, the oil is flowing all the way back to the oil pan after sitting for a while. Then you crank it and oil first must go through the bearings, then fully prime the oil filter, then finally make it to the head causing the dry valve sounds.
Go get a Fully Synthetic 10W-30 oil and a filter with a anti-siphon vale (check valve) and try that first and foremost. Fully Synthetic's flow better in cold temps as well as better protection all the way through hot temps.
